Shingle Rejuvenation Treatment in Martinsburg, WV
A bio based treatment that puts the lost oils back into aging asphalt shingles, adds 5 to 15 years of roof life and costs 60 to 80 percent less than a full replacement. It is the only thing Shingle Shield does, and we do it properly.
Your roof is not worn out. It is dried out.
Asphalt shingles do not fail because the material runs out. They fail because the oils that keep the asphalt flexible evaporate under years of sun and freeze thaw. Once those go, the shingle stiffens, curls, sheds granules and lets water find a way in.
Rejuvenation reverses that chemistry rather than covering it up. A bio based penetrating agent soaks into the shingle mat, restores flexibility, reseals micro cracks and locks loose granules back down. Nothing is torn off the house, nothing is painted over and no layer of anything new is added on top.
This is the treatment that saves the twenty thousand dollar conversation, whether the house is here in Martinsburg, over in Winchester, VA or up in Hagerstown, MD.
Six signs a roof is ready for treatment.
- Shingle corners curling or cupping upward
- Bare patches where the granule layer has thinned
- Fine cracks or splits across the shingle face
- A faded, chalky, sun beaten appearance
- Shingles that snap rather than bend
- A roof in the 8 to 20 year window
Any two of those on a roof under 20 years old is usually worth a free assessment before you call anyone about a replacement.
Maltenes, and why losing them ends a roof early.
The part nobody explains at the kitchen table, in plain language.
What is actually inside a shingle
An asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt and surfaced with ceramic coated granules. The asphalt is not one substance. It is a blend, and the two families that matter are the maltenes and the asphaltenes.
Asphaltenes are the hard, rigid part. They give the shingle body and structure. Maltenes are the oily part. They are what make the shingle flexible, what let it expand in July heat and contract on a January night without splitting, what hold the granules in place and what keep the seal strip tacky enough to stay bonded to the course below it.
A new shingle has plenty of both, in balance. The manufacturer designed it that way, and the warranty on the day it was installed assumed the balance would hold.
It does not hold. Maltenes are volatile. Ultraviolet light drives them out of the surface layer year after year, and every freeze and thaw cycle in the Eastern Panhandle works a little more of them loose. The asphaltenes stay behind. The ratio shifts, slowly and invisibly, toward brittle.
What that looks like from the driveway
By eight to twelve years, a roof in this climate has usually lost enough maltene content that the shingle no longer moves the way it was designed to. The first visible sign is color. The surface goes flat and chalky where it used to be saturated.
Next comes shape. Corners lift and cup, because a stiff shingle cannot lie flat against the deck through a full temperature swing. Then the granule layer starts letting go, and you find grit at the bottom of the downspout after a hard rain. Every granule that leaves exposes a little more asphalt directly to the sun, which drives out maltenes faster, which loosens more granules. The failure feeds itself.
Somewhere in there, hairline cracks open across the shingle face and the seal strip gives up its grip. That is the point at which wind starts lifting tabs and water starts finding the deck. A replacement contractor standing in your driveway at that stage will quote you a full tear off, and they are not lying about what they see. They are just answering a different question than the one worth asking first.
Putting back what the sun took out.
One product, one application, applied by people who do nothing else.
A bio based rejuvenating agent
The treatment we apply is bio based, made from a renewable soy source rather than a petroleum solvent. That matters for two reasons. It is safe around landscaping, pets and the people in the house, and it is chemically compatible with the asphalt it is going into rather than sitting on top of it as a foreign film.
It is not a paint. It is not a sealer. It is not a coat of anything. There is no new layer on your roof when we leave, and the shingles look like shingles, just darker and healthier than they did that morning.
What it does is soak in. The agent penetrates the shingle surface and moves down into the mat, where it restores maltene content to the asphalt that has been losing it for a decade. As the maltene balance comes back, the asphalt softens toward the flexibility it had when it was new.
What changes inside the shingle
Flexibility returns first. A treated shingle bends again instead of snapping, which means it can handle the daily expansion and contraction that was tearing it apart.
Micro cracks close. The restored asphalt flows into the hairline fractures that opened as the shingle dried, sealing paths water was starting to use.
Granules bond back down. Loose granules that were on their way off the roof are re anchored into softened asphalt, which restores the shield that protects the mat underneath from ultraviolet light. That is the loop that was feeding itself, running the other direction.
On a genuine candidate that adds 5 to 15 years of roof life, for 60 to 80 percent less than a replacement. Most homeowners save $15,000 to $30,000 by treating a roof instead of replacing it early.
Assess, prepare, treat. Usually inside two days.
Nothing is torn off the house at any point.
Assessment and candidacy
We come look at the roof and check shingle condition, age and mat integrity, then tell you plainly whether treatment will work. Roofs that are too far gone get told no, with photos showing exactly why. There is no charge for that visit.
Surface preparation
The agent has to reach bare shingle to penetrate, so the surface is prepared and left to dry before anything is applied. Landscaping, furniture and walkways are covered before the first piece of equipment comes off the truck.
Treatment application
The bio based formula goes on with calibrated equipment so every plane receives an even, measured dose. Coverage is documented plane by plane, and the site is cleared completely before we pull out.

Rejuvenation carries a written guarantee on both the treatment material and our workmanship. The term is stated on your quote before anyone climbs a ladder, so you are never guessing about what is covered or for how long.
We will also put the expected life extension in writing. Treatment adds 5 to 15 years to a genuine candidate. It does not rescue a roof that is already failing structurally, and no honest company will tell you otherwise. That honesty is the whole reason Ricky Thompson started this business.
Written guarantee, term stated on the quote
Coverage confirmed in writing before work begins, so you know what is backed and for how long.
- Adds 5 to 15 years of life on a qualifying roof
- Honest candidacy call, we turn down roofs that will not hold treatment
Not every roof can be rejuvenated. We will tell you which one you have.
Ricky Thompson started this company after watching neighbors get pushed into replacements they did not need.
A strong candidate when
- The roof is roughly 8 to 20 years old
- Shingles are intact and sitting flat on the deck
- Granule loss is moderate rather than severe
- You see dryness and fading, not structural damage
- Asphalt shingles, architectural or three tab
Replacement is the honest answer when
- Shingles are missing across whole sections
- The decking underneath is soft or sagging
- The mat is exposed and disintegrating
- Water has been entering the structure for years
- The roof is past 25 years and failing everywhere
If we find that second column, we say so and we do not charge you for the visit. Book the free assessment.
What the roof looks like the week after.
Setting the expectation honestly is easier than explaining it later.
What you will notice
The color deepens. Sun faded planes come back toward the tone the shingles had when they were newer, because saturated asphalt reflects light differently than dried out asphalt does. Most homeowners see that from the street within a few days.
Loose granules stop showing up at the base of the downspout after a rain, usually within the first couple of storms. Curled corners relax back toward the deck as the asphalt regains flexibility, though shingles that have been curled for years may not lie perfectly flat again.
What it does not do
It does not replace missing shingles, rebuild soft decking or repair damage that water has already done inside the house. It does not turn a 27 year old roof into a new one, and we will not quote it as if it does.
It is a chemistry fix for a chemistry problem. When the problem is structural, the honest answer is a replacement from somebody who does replacements, and you will hear that from us at the assessment rather than after you have paid for something.

Shingle rejuvenation questions.
- How much does rejuvenation cost compared to replacement?
It runs 60 to 80 percent less than a full replacement. Most homeowners save $15,000 to $30,000 by restoring instead of replacing early. Your number comes back in writing, usually within 24 hours of the free assessment.
- How long does the treatment take?
Most roofs are prepared and treated inside one to two days. The treatment needs dry conditions to penetrate, so we schedule around rain rather than push through it. You do not need to be home while the work happens.
- What is the process exactly?
We assess the roof and confirm it is a candidate, prepare the surface and let it dry, then apply a bio based penetrating agent that soaks into the shingle mat, restores flexibility and locks granules down. Nothing is torn off and no new layer is added on top.
- Is the treatment safe around my family, pets and plants?
The formula is bio based and made from a renewable soy source rather than a petroleum solvent. Landscaping, furniture and walkways are covered before we start regardless, and everything is uncovered and cleared before the crew leaves.
- How many years will it add to my roof?
On a genuine candidate, 5 to 15 years. Where a specific roof lands in that range depends on how old the shingles are when we treat them, how much granule loss has already happened and how much direct sun the planes take.
- Can it be applied more than once?
Maltene loss is a continuous process, so a roof that responded well the first time can be evaluated again later in its life. We will tell you at that point whether a second application still makes sense or whether the roof has moved past it.
- Will it work on my roof type?
The treatment is formulated for asphalt shingles, both architectural and three tab, which covers the large majority of homes in this area. It is not used on metal, tile, slate or flat membrane roofs.
- What guarantee comes with rejuvenation?
A written guarantee on treatment materials and workmanship. The term depends on the package your roof calls for and it is stated on the quote before work begins, not buried somewhere afterward.
- Do I need permits, and will this void my roof warranty?
No permits are needed, since this is maintenance rather than construction. Most manufacturer warranties have already expired at the age where a roof becomes a candidate, and we document everything we apply for your records.
- What if you decide my roof is not a candidate?
Then we tell you so, we show you the photos behind that call and there is no charge for the visit. We would rather lose the job than treat a roof that the treatment cannot help. Read the full FAQ.
